Exciting Competition at the 12th International 9 Eylül Izmir Half Marathon

The 12th International 9 Eylül Izmir Half Marathon, organized by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, was filled with excitement as participants celebrated Izmir's 102nd anniversary of liberation from occupation. The event saw 2,500 athletes racing along the scenic Cumhuriyet Square-Inciraltı-Cumhuriyet Square route, with the competition starting with athletes with disabilities.

At the conclusion of the race, awards were presented by prominent figures, including Deputy Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Dr. Levent Yıldır, President of the Turkish Athletics Federation Fatih Çintimar, Deputy Secretary-General of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Prof. Dr. Pınar Okyay, Izmir Youth and Sports Provincial Director Murat Eskici, Head of Youth and Sports Services at Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Anıl Kaçar, and Chairman of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Youth and Sports Club Hüseyin Egeli.

High-Level Performances and Victories

In the Turkish men's category, Ahmet Alkanoğlu claimed first place, while Dilan Atak Kuluk triumphed in the women's race. The overall men's category was dominated by Kenyan athlete Dominick Kipkirui Bett, who took first place, followed by fellow Kenyan Michael Kiplangat Mutai in second, and Ahmet Alkanoğlu in third. On the women’s side, French runner Marie Clemence Calvin won first place, with Dilan Atak Kuluk finishing second and Fatma Arık in third.

The awards for these top performances were presented by Deputy Mayor Dr. Levent Yıldır and Turkish Athletics Federation President Fatih Çintimar. Throughout the race, the people of Izmir lined the streets to cheer on the athletes, offering enthusiastic support along the course.

Awards Across Multiple Categories

Prizes were given not only to the overall male and female winners and top Turkish athletes but also to participants in various age categories ranging from 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, and 75+ years old.

Record Participation from 42 Provinces and 19 Countries

This year’s race, held under the prestigious World Athletics Road Label status for the third consecutive year, witnessed the highest turnout in the event’s 12-year history. Runners from 42 Turkish provinces and 19 countries took part, including renowned Kenyan and French athletes, adding international flair to the competition. The race also attracted great interest from national athletes.
