Bengaluru Marathon (Bengaluru, India, October 6)
Bengaluru, often hailed as the fitness capital of India, is gearing up for the 11th edition of its annual marathon, a prestigious event that celebrates the city's vibrant running community and its dedication to promoting a fit and healthy lifestyle. Known for its dynamic marathon scene, Bengaluru continues to lead the way in India's running revolution.
The Bengaluru Marathon, first held as the "Lipton Bangalore International Marathon" on May 15, 2005, began with humble beginnings. The inaugural race attracted around 15,000 participants across various categories, with Kennedy Chinna Ramu claiming victory in the full marathon with an impressive time of 2:23:46. Since then, the event has evolved, with subsequent editions showcasing the growth and enthusiasm for running in the city.
In 2006, the marathon saw H A Chinnappa and Deepthi Ashok emerge as champions in the men's and women's full marathon categories, respectively. The event continued to gain momentum, even as it faced challenges such as traffic and unforeseen interruptions during its third edition in 2007.
A significant shift occurred in 2014 when NEB Sports took over the organization of the marathon, rebranding it as the "Shriram Properties Bengaluru Marathon." This new era marked a renewed focus on enhancing the event's quality and experience for participants. Despite setbacks like the postponement of the 2020 race due to the pandemic, the marathon has remained a cornerstone of Bengaluru's running culture.
The course records from the Crossover era stand as a testament to the marathon's competitive spirit: Kenya's Eston Nyaga set a record of 2:22:32 in 2007, while Ethiopia's Marashet Jimma achieved a time of 2:45:34 in 2005 for the women's category.
